Recently, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and his wife Jenny put their lovely 4,400 square foot beach house on Sullivan’s Island up for sale. Asking price: $3.5 million. According to web reports, the house has six bedrooms, five baths, and from the photos posted online looks nice enough from the inside. A sales brochure reportedly describes the house as “a great value for true oceanfront property.”
The story goes that Gov. and Mrs. Sanford had decided to build their dream home on acreage they own in South Carolina’s Low Country. It’s hard to imagine how much dreamier you can get than a house on the ocean, but perhaps they were worried about hurricanes.
Anyway, no one apparently thought much about the house Gov. Sanford and his wife wanted to live in until this week, when news broke that the Governor had been having an affair with a woman from Argentina, a fact he said he confessed to his wife five months ago. In the wake of the news this week, it appears that Gov. and Mrs. Sanford’s home has been taken off the market.
There’s always a story behind every house sale. Getting the story right can mean the difference between getting your price or getting hammered. When you’re selling under pressure, either because of a job loss, death of a spouse, medical issues or marital troubles, and the facts of your sale are widely known, it’s more likely that a buyer will be able to take advantage of the situation.
The best thing you can do if you have to sell is not let on that you’re in trouble.
