Florida Mansion for Sale: $10

By Kathy Kristof | Jun 23, 2009 |

Want to buy a 6,442 square-foot Florida mansion for $10? That’s the proposition that Miles and Laura Brannan are offering as a way of unloading their elegant water-front home in Ft. Lauderdale.

The couple, who both work in real estate, say the slowing economy has made it difficult to afford the elegant mansion they purchased in 2005, so they’re raffling it off for $10 a ticket. Only 300,000 tickets will be sold. The raffle will be held on December 31, 2009.Miles and Laura Brannan are raffling off their mansion for $10 a ticket

What happens if they don’t sell all 300,000 tickets by then? Then they say they’ll split the proceeds of the raffle between the winner and a drug treatment center called The Mission of St. Francis and figure out another way to sell the house. The home has six bedrooms, 6.5 baths and a home theater with a 120″ screen, not to mention a four-car garage and 1,000 square-foot master bedroom with a balcony overlooking the water.

On first brush, I figured the raffle was a scam. But the couple’s press materials maintain that Chicago Title is holding the money, so I called the title company’s Ft. Lauderdale office to check. Sure enough, a spokeswoman for the title company says they have the cash in hand and that they wouldn’t let anyone use their company’s name if they didn’t.

So, what’s the catch? Well if you win the house, the property taxes amount to $34,000. And, according to both Zillow and Google maps, you’d have the biggest and most expensive home in the neighborhood. That’s not good for resale value, but if you got the house for $10, you probably don’t care.

If even the taxes of a $3 million mansion aren’t in your price range, check out Ilyce Glink’s blog, where she explains that the government is throwing one lucrative incentive after the next at today’s prospective buyers.

I bought $10 tickets when it said St. Simeons church was the charity. There also was a sign posted in front of the house. The sign is gone now. Now the website is selling $30 tickets and the supposed charity is the Mission of St. Francis and Dennis Rodman is the spokesman for the raffle. I think I got scammed.

RE: Florida Mansion for Sale: $10

I bought a ticket back in September for $10.00. Since they jacked up the price I assume I'm grandfathered in. I believe it should be illegal (and might be) to tamper with a raffle once it has begun. I am curious if anyone has a copy of the original "terms" that were offered with this raffle. Regardless of where the money goes (good cause or bad) I'm worried that the Brannans have violated the terms that I originally bought the ticket under. It seems overly convenient to push the date back 3 months to March just because they haven't sold enough tickets.

I'm calling a lawyer on Monday. If this isn't legit, heads are gonna roll!

I have the same concerns because in the last email when they added Dennis Rodman it stated that no matter how many tickets were sold that the raffle would take place on 12/25/2009. I would think they cannot change the terms. I was thinking of submitting this to the state attorney general's office for investigation..

I bought 3 tickets but for 30$ each. This raffle is clearly violating federal and state law. I have filed a complaint the the AG office and will also file a complaint with the FTC. I urge you all to do the same.

its now known to be a scam

i paid $30 a ticket and was charged fees on top of it. i just
got an email saying they will delay the raffle by 90 days and
hold our money, and then will decide maybe to raffle 50%
of the house. see attached letter i got from them.

"To all of our friends and supporters, we want to wish you a
very happy holiday season with all your loved ones and
    friends.

As you know, it has been our wish to complete the raffle by
Christmas day. However, due to the economy, we have not
sold enough tickets and have decided to postpone the raffle
for 90 days (the drawing will now be held on March 25,
2010). The reason for this decision is due to the fact that
this has never been just about raffling off a home - it's
equally as important to keep the Mission of St. Francis from
having to close it?s doors after so many years of service to
those who are in need of their help.

As the Mission has stated, we pray and hope for your
understanding. By extending this raffle, many more will
benefit during these hard economic times.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and ask
that you please help us get this done by contacting those in
your address book. At the end of the extension, all of the
same rules and terms will apply. If we're still unable to
meet our goal, we'll do a 50/50 drawing, in which the
winner will get 50% of the proceeds, and the other 50% will
    benefit the charity.

On behalf of the Brannan family and the Mission, we thank
you for your patience, understanding and your willingness to
help us not only raffle the home, but allow the Mission to
continue helping those in need. We hope that you have a
    blessed holiday and happy 2010!"

BAIT AND SWITCH, THEY ARE REALTORS

This is outrageous, bait and switch! I have sent all parties involved my feelings about this and expect a 50/50 raffle to be held this Monday, 12/28 with full disclosure (actual # of tickets sold at $ 10.00/$ 30.00, list of winners, etc as stated in orig Terms). There are many others on various websites talking about this, it isn?t about the $ 10.95 paid in June, it?s all about integrity. The Mission and a winner should both be getting at least $ 400K each since apx 80,000 tickets were sold (at 2 different prices).

Got an update today from them via email, that the drawing will take place before the 31st and it will be a 50-50.

At this point, I honestly believe the 'winner' will probably be a 'friend' of the family.

My complain with the AG office will still stand, no matter what happens with this raffle. They have clearly broken laws, the charity #1, the charity #2, the Title agency, Dennis Rodman, the Brannans and showclix.

to remi10: DITTO! I completely feel the same way.

I wonder about close ties Chi Title has with the Brannans since they are both realtors/investors.

As for Showclix (based in Pgh, PA), I will never purchase any future tickets from them!

How could there be so many entities involved that nobody took a stand for integrity! All must be held accountable.

re Mansion raffle, my ticket was refunded IN ERROR by showclix.com

Has anybody received an email from Showclix.com saying they issued you a refund and cancelled your ticket?

Check out the many posts at www.realestateconsumernews.com re the Ft Lauderdale house raffle ......... I was just sent an email from Showclix.com that they issued me a refund and that my ticket is void! I have never requested a refund!! This is retaliation because I have done some digging and complained about the 50/50 raffle being cancelled for 12/25.
