The New ABCs of Success: Always Be Creating

By Robert Pagliarini | May 19, 2009 |

In every economic crisis, there have been those individuals who have emerged from the aftermath even more financially secure. Luck has something to do with it, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. In order to rise up and get ahead, you need to shift paradigms. You need a new way to look at and interact with the world. Fortunately, it’s as simple as re-learning your ABCs.

In the movie Glengarry Glen Ross, Alec Baldwin taught us the ’80s ABCs: “A-always, B-be, C-closing. Always be closing!” But that’s old school. The new ABCs are Always Be Creating. People who create will be the people who succeed and excel. If you can create, you can write your own check.

I know what you’re thinking: work stinks. They’re talking about more layoffs, bonuses are out of the question, and you have to pitch in more for health insurance. Your 401(k) is in shambles, and your house is worth 40 percent less than it was a couple of years ago. The vision you had for your life has been seriously challenged. All you feel like doing when you come home is kicking back, cracking open a Heineken, and watching the tube. That’s understandable, but it’s absolutely bass ackwards.

You must get out there and create — start a blog, write a book, record a video, start a business, code a new application, etc. It’s easy to give advice like this, but I’ve tried to follow it, too. A couple of months ago I came up with an idea for a free personal finance eBook titled Plan Z: How to Survive the 2009 Financial Crisis (and even live a little better).

Why did I create something for free? I have counterintuitive (some would say controversial) advice on how to get through this recession, and I wanted to spread the word and build my brand: get the media’s attention, build followers, and attract new readers to this blog and future projects. So I used my other 8 hours and wrote and wrote and wrote. I then partnered with several people and got the whole thing completed in about a month. It took me some time, but it didn’t cost me anything. (More on how to find partners to donate their services for free in an upcoming post).

In a recession there’s a whole lot of talk about reducing, cutting, shrinking, and decreasing — but what if you took a different view? What if instead you looked for opportunities? What if you looked for ways to grow and expand and create?

Here are a few ideas on how to jumpstart your creative thinking:

  • Brainstorm. Think about what services/products might be needed if this turmoil continues and what services/products people will want when we recover.
  • $1 million game. This is a fun one. If you absolutely positively had to make $1 million in less than 365 days, what would you do? What area would you focus on? What skills would you have to rely on? You might not start any of the businesses you think about, but it’s a great way to jumpstart your creativity.
  • Get partners. Get two or three friends/colleagues together for a twice-a-month meeting. Sit down with them and brainstorm. Tell them what’s on your mind — what ideas you’re toying with. Press each other to come up with at least three business ideas for each meeting. If you agree on one, you have your team in place. But even if you don’t, this get-together will force you to think entrepreneurially inside AND outside of the group.

Your goal is to create something — anything. Create content. Start a blog. Invent a prototype. This blog post you’re reading right now is an example of creating something. What can you create?

RE: The New ABCs of Success: Always Be Creating

Leaders get a high return on investment in any time dedicated to creativity - even if the writing, programming, etc. don't have anything to do with your work. As a leadership coach, I totally agree on all three of your suggestions for jumpstarting creative thinking on the job.

But I also know that creativity for creativity's sake can be equally, even sometimes more valuable. Even if you paint or draw something and burn it, sing in the car, dance when no one's watching... by really unleashing creativity, you'll create neural pathways and release neuro chemicals that will help you be a more creative, less stressed, better focused person on the job.

I agree that we need to consciously shift paradigms to support the creative process - I've written an article about it called "The Yin & Yang of Success" on my blog: www.drjoni.com

@Dr. Joni Right. There seems to be a "practical" creativity where you use the creative process to build/create something of value that you hope to prosper from and the creativity you speak of where the benefit is the creativity itself. I strongly believe that any kind of exercise that inspires creativity is healthy and can lead to more practical "aha" moments. Thanks for the link post. I'll check it out...

RE: The New ABCs of Success: Always Be Creating

Hi Robert, I like your new ABC. While I am a retiree pensioner, it is still good advice for me, and, as such, I have been following it ever since I retired. e.g. I did set up a jazz group in my retirement town, and we have taken the step of using the bar of a friendly pub as our fourth-Sunday-of-the-month afternoon jazz club. When one of our number gave me a CD with sixteen pictures of our first club-meet, I opened a "My Space" page, and added these pictures to it with suitable captions; now I have to start learning how to creatively use the new 'Space. What is more entrepreneurial is a book idea filling out the title, 'Post-Capitalism'; It is my belief that we really are at the end of a system - whether it be of two and a half centuries of Capitalism or five thousand years of Empire. Your blog inspires me to work faster and more creatively in getting this book underway. With Thanks

@Kurst I love it! You are living the new ABCs. While some do it to prosper, it sounds like much of your "return on investment" is learning new things and feeling better. Would love to hear your thoughts (a blog maybe?) on what the "post capitalism" world looks like...

RE: The New ABCs of Success: Always Be Creating

    Hi Robert

True because success needs confidence, and confidence is often reached when you achieve something.

Applying my n?1 rule "treat any obstacle as an opportunity" I finally finished writing a book a couple of months ago. Not only it helped me escape mentally from a depressing situation at work and from being an expat in an exhausting country, it also strenghtened a lot my self confidence. And of course, I will try my best to get published, but the most important thing was to do it, and I feel I can do anything.

So now, since my micromanager boss still bothers me, I started writing some lyrics and creating music with a friend (and read bnet efficiently everyday) until I take a switch

    Great article !

@Rebecc@... Wow! You are the epitome of Always Be Creating! Many times, just creating something is enough, but what if you could take what you created and prosper from it? What are your plans with the book, music, etc.?

RE: The New ABCs of Success: Always Be Creating

Creating something IS the best antidote for a poor self-image. It allows you to realize your better self or to reinvent yourself in a new light. I'm finding that this economy is all about reinvention. You have to reinvent who you are, what you're about, and what business you want to be in. The sooner you start something new, the easier it will be to start something else that's new. Creativity feeds on itself. Take yourself on a walk, or take a long bath or shower. I came up with a new marketing/promotional idea for my company this morning while walking to the lakefront at 6:00am. Great column, Robert.

@Ilyce Glink Exactly . . . creativity definitely leads to more creativity. We just have to overcome the strong impulse to do nothing. Once we break that creating gets easier and easier.

    @Robert
Yes prosper from creation is the plan, but until then a girl has to live. I believe the great thing in our times is that we have the choice to live as many lives as we wish and that each one of these lives can also stimulate the other.

As for the book, I plan to write the script, find a director/producer to make a movie, go to Cannes and win a prize. For the music, start a band in my other 8 hours ..

Thanks for the creative ideas here!

Your comment: (More on how to find partners to donate their services for free in an upcoming post) really caught my attention. I believe we are entering a collaboration era and this is something I want to learn more about. Have you written that post yet? I searched through your posts and didn't find it, but I may have just missed it. Looking forward to it!!

@hrcoach Thanks! I haven't posted that column yet. I wrote about it extensively in my forthcoming book. I just need to edit it down for a column...
