Your Other 8 Hours

How President Obama Spends His Other 8 Hours

By Robert Pagliarini | May 26, 2009 |

I love to know how people spend their time, so you can imagine my glee when I came across a Newsweek article over the weekend where Obama explains his typical day:

“I’m a night owl. My usual day [is]: I work out in the morning; I get to the office around 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.; work till about 6:30 p.m.; have dinner with the family, hang out with the kids and put them to bed about 8:30 p.m. And then I’ll probably read briefing papers or do paperwork or write stuff until about 11:30 p.m. and then I usually have about a half hour to read before I go to bed . . . about midnight, 12:30 a.m. — sometimes a little later.”

You might not know it, but there is a treasure trove of information in this little paragraph about what the leader of the most powerful nation in the world values.  Let’s CSI this:

  1. Mental energy. President Obama knows that he gets his most mental energy at night. (”I’m a night owl.”) He probably thinks clearest at night and finds that he can make the best decisions late at night when much of the country is sleeping. When do you have the most mental energy? This might coincide with when you have the most physical energy but not necessarily. Keep a log for the next week. When do you feel the most “on”? You can then schedule brainstorming or mentally tasking activities at this time, when you are primed.
  2. Morning routine. Health is obviously important to Obama. So much so that it’s the first thing he does in the morning. He doesn’t hope to squeeze in a workout if he has time, he ensures he has time by doing it first thing. If you want something done, do it first. Don’t kid yourself into thinking you’ll fit it into your schedule, because something else always comes up. What’s important to you? Could you wake up 30 minutes early and do it?
  3. Family time. One of the biggest complaints of most parents is that they don’t spend enough time with their kids. Obama makes sure he schedules time with this family each day. Do you cringe when you read “schedule time with family?” Does it seem a little impersonal? Get over it. You don’t think twice about scheduling a 11:00 a.m. meeting with Joe in Operations, so don’t hesitate to schedule time with your family.
  4. Getting ahead. It’s clear that the president dedicates some of his other 8 hours to getting ahead, learning, and growing. Does he need to read briefing papers or do paperwork? I’m sure he could “outsource” this to someone else, but he doesn’t. He invests part of his night to his job.Do you leave work and forget about it? What if you spent 30 minutes a night on growing, learning, and advancing within your profession or company? I’m not talking about doing busywork. I’m talking about doing the high-level thinking and creating that you just can’t do at the office. Take a few minutes each night to work on your day job.
  5. Night routine. According to the interview, President Obama relaxes by reading, not by watching TV. He expands his mind each night and learns something new. What I found interesting is that he’s not reading about politics, foreign affairs, or anything related to his “job.” He’s currently reading Netherland by Joseph O’Neill, a novel about cricket — obviously not something that will directly help him in his job. Make sure the time you spend relaxing is not at all related to your work. Don’t read and check your Blackberry every five minutes. Escape your world and do something completely different. It will engage different parts of your brain and will make you a more well-rounded person.

I don’t care how busy I get or how important I think I am, if the President of the United States still has time to exercise, spend time with family, read, and grow, I certainly can, too.  What about you?

Well, President Obama and I have something in common -- we both work out in the morning!!

Seriously, though, if he has time to work out and hang with the family, not one other person in this country can say they are too busy!!

@MoneyMama You got it! It all comes down to setting priorities--figuring out what's most important and making time for it by scheduling it.

    I'm done with the newsletter

I'm unsubscribing from the email newsletter because I'm tired of all the "Obama" articles. This is a business publication, the majority of articles should be business oriented, featuring business people. Obama is a politician. Some articles on Obama are good as there are some qualities that cross boundaries, but every newsletter shouldn't have an article on something great that Obama does.

    I'm done.

@masummers Nothing like mentioning Obama to get the blood pumping. I received a long private email from a guy blasting my article as well (I wish he would have posted it here). Here's what you're missing . . . you read "Obama" and immediately think it's an article about politics and/or how great he is. I encourage you to re-read the article. I'm fascinated about how the most powerful man in the free world uses his time and the lessons we can take from that . . . unless you don't think you can learn anything from a man who came from nothing to become the President of the United States.

Why does everything have to fit into a particular box? Why do we need to label everything? @masummers needs to look outside of the 'Business' box and realise that the box labelled 'President Obama' also has the labels 'Leader of the Free World', 'Father', 'Husband', 'Educator', 'Student', and many others.

Robert, you have concisely explained that the President does 'think outside' the box lablled 'President Obama' - namely by having boxes labelled, Morning Routine, Family Time, Getting Ahead, and Night Routine.

Maybe we should all expand our focus - for example, I'm a student of Leadership...sure I look at Business Leaders, but I have gained more insight into how to be a Business Leader from studying the likes of Leonidis and Spartacus. If you can inspire and lead people into a fight to the death, then you can inspire 'Joe in Operations' to do a great job.

There is nothing about President Obama's routine that we can't replicate into our own lives - it just proves that we all have the potential to inspire and lead people to achieve what they once thought impossible.

How in the world do you consider that the business of America...yeah, that place that allows entrepreneurship, money-making and all that good stuff...something that's not allowed in a business publication?

Clearly, your political bias is coloring (pun intended) your view of items featured in this newsletter. Frankly, if this is your view, we'd rather not read what you have to say. The business of the presidency is the business of America; such articles/insights are welcome, as this administration will likely have a profound effect on businesses large and small.

@I'mSpartacus Well said. Nothing gets me ticked off faster than someone with a closed mind. Although it sounds Pollyanna, I'm of the opinion that we can learn something from everyone. Obama--love him or hate him--can teach you something. If you don't think so, how do you expect to learn and get a different perspective? And guess what, George W can teach you something too. Apparently @masummers didn't read this post http://bit.ly/KlxG9

Robert, I agree with your response to my comments.

George W has taught us much - We learn from our mistakes, and George W has provided plenty of learning opportunities.

Edison said it best when a journalist asked him about his 700 'failed' attempts at creating the electric lightbulb - he responded that they were not failures, but 700 successful experiments in proving what won't work.

George W was successful in proving what won't work - now we have an opportunity to see if the alternative will work.

    Hi Robert,

I agree we can all broaden our horizons and learn new perspectives from others, even those we may disagree with for political reasons. I think it's a good piece on time management. In today's hectic world, we need different tips on how to manage our time.

@gyasi1020 What's fascinating is that research shows we have MORE leisure time now than we did decades ago, but it just doesn't feel like it. I am working on a post about why this is and what we can do about it. Thanks for contributing.

    Robert,

It was an excellent article, and informative. Which I believe is what you are most about: being informative. At the end of the day, if @masummers missed the point of the newsletter, are you really going to miss him/her? Additionally, nearly every major publication in the world has an article about President Obama, if not daily, then weekly (did you not mention Newsweek, uh... sometimes touted as a "business" publication?). Not only is he and everything that pertains to his being the President of these great United States is about "business," it's about really BIG business, as aptly put by @LittleFish7. I suppose that individual will have to unsubscribe from all of them also, as well as tune out just about every news station. In fact, they may have to find a way to leave Earth!

Hey but cant you learn from @masummers also?

You have to let a person express his/her opinion and not be all up in arms if their opinion is contrary to yours.
Though I personally love to read about Obama, I would still say we let @masummers express a persoanl opinion without pouncing on him/her.

The article and all views expressed here are interesting though

@anjali114 Apparently, no, I cannot learn from @masummers because he choose to stop contributing. He didn't like the post? No problem, but tell me why? It's not enough that it was about Obama. Tell me what specifically do you disagree with. I'm a proponent of learning from all sources, but don't come to me with problems (i.e., this post sucks)--what is there to learn from that?

Thanks for jumping in the mix.

I'd love to have time to do morning exercise, but it takes me
one hour to get to work. Obama is enjoying the benefit of
living in the white house, i remember Bush also has the
similar routine, only he takes more vocations hehe

    Hi Robert,
Great Post; I just couldn't agree more..President Obama is a GREAT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION for me! I keep telling my employees to always reflect on how to improve their work and re-invent themselves when they are away from the office; I also do most of the creative thinking at home and very much also a "night owl".
While commuting to work, I review my plan for the day and how to connect all the dots to maximize my staff's efficiency.
